Our First Master Guide Camporee - A Success!!!

This past weekend was our first Master Guide camporee. The camporee was orginally to be held at Nameless Valley Ranch (NVR) in Leander, Texas. There was an early departure team and a later departure team. The original plan called for the early team to leave Garland at 12:30 pm, arrive at NVR and setup camp in readiness for the second departees to arrive later in the afternoon. The early departure had to be shifted back to 2:30 pm due to a students schedule.

We started on our way at 3:00 pm we encountered some sprinkles along the way but they were infrequent. When we arrive in Leander there was more than sprinkles there was rain. When we arrived at the campgrounds there was evidence that more rain had fallen at the campground. We were told a decision was being made whether the camp would be cancelled or not. I decided then and there if the camp was cancelled at NVR that I would host the campers on my property. I really didn't want to disappoint the young people. They had their hearts set on camping.

Through Spanish translators we were told the camporee would be cancelled. I immediately called our late departing crew advising them to turn around as the camporee had been cancelled. I relayed the idea of going on with the camporee but changing the venue to my property and it was agreed upon. I mean we had our equipment, our food and most of all our excitement. We wanted to camp!

We made it back to my place in Royse City by 12:00 am. I called our other crew and they came over. That evening we setup our tents and went to sleep. The following morning we setup our kitchen and dining area. We spent the weekend working on our Master Guide curriculum and discussing prayer. Flag raising and lowering were also a part of our routine just as we would have at camporee. Sunday we had an obstacle event, went to the lake to swim and had movie night under the stars. We had a campfire both Saturday and Sunday nights as well.

We woke up Monday prepared breakfast and broke down camp by 10:30 AM. It was great camporee and a great weekend. I think we will try it again someday.
